Do you think it's right for DCE to use the image of Christopher Reeve in it's promotions and within their comic books to portray Superman? http://www.dccomics.com/dccomics/# What do you believe? Should his image be protected such as those of Bogart and Marilyn Monroe, or Michael Jackson?

I think it's okay, since technically it's not "Christopher Reeve" it's Superman. It's not like it's a picture of Reeve in normal clothes holding a Coke can to sell soda.

Plus, it seems like the more Gary Frank draws Superman, the less he looks like Reeve, and the more he just looks like "the Gary Frank Superman."

It appears to me the opposite is true, the more he draws him, the more Superman is starting to look like Christopher Reeve. The first anyone noticed the likeness of Chris Reeve being used as a template for Suprman was in the final two issues of Trials of Shazam. I respectfully disagree with you. Isn't it a violation of the Reeve estate. And who is protecting his rights, more importantly his likeness being used without permission of his estate?

I don't see the problem. First off, he is in costume, as someone pointed out. Second, Superman is how he made it big and got the vast majority of fame and wealth. Third, to my knowledge, he never regretted being Superman, never complained or said "Man, that was a horrible thing."

I don't see why it would be an issue.

The issue depends upon the use of his likeness, is condoned by his estate. Did DCE pay the estate of Christopher Reeve for the use of his likeness in portraying Superman in their comic books after his death? If not, why not? When Christopher Reeve signed the contract to play Superman in the movies, was it supposed to be for in perpetuity?? I don't think so. And you are naive for believing so. And certainly his obligation wasn't supposed to extend beyond his life cycle. Other stars have estate clauses concerning their likeness being used without permission, and a fee for it's use should be made. The issue isn't about what made him famous, or how he gained monetarily portraying Superman. The point is, since he died, is DCE taking unfair advantage upon the estate of Christopher Reeve, and benefiting from his likeness without payment to the estate? The estate is within it's rights to object to the likeness of Christopher Reeve being used by DCE, despite what Mr. Reeve might have thought about his connection to Superman. Certainly Christopher Reeve is not around to speak for himself. Clearly that is the intent of the courts system.

They've been using Reeve as an inspiration for Superman drawings for years. John Byrne said he purposely tried to make his Superman look like Reeve as opposed to Curt Swan's version back in the 80's.

Warner Bros probably owns the rights to Reeve's image in the Superman suit, as they used it on lunch boxes and merchandise back in the day. And since the image portrayed is intended to be that of Superman, and not the legal entity Christopher Reeve himself, I don't think clearing it with his estate is necessary.

Besides, it's meant to be an touching homage by one artist, not a promotional tool.

If I was casted as Superman, I would not be offered but them using my image for Superman. Even if I past, I would tell my family to let them use my image. But I hope he keeps being draw like this. Christopher Reeve is Superman.

Where is there a picture of Christopher Reeve in their promotions and in their books? I don't see him. Your link just takes me to the DC Comics website?

Off the top of my head; I can only remember
Amy Grant suing because they used her likeness
on a Doctor Strange cover.
Samuel Jackson loved that they used him as Nick Fury.
Dark Horse through George Lucas can use the likenesses
of the Star Wars actors.
I don't think Sting knew or cares that he was the likeness
for John Constantine.
But I digress...I hope the Reeve estate gets some dough, anyway.

Doesn't Reeve's charity use the S-Shield on those tags they sell? DC owns the rights to that shield, so obviously they are on good terms with the Reeve estate.

Of course the question needed to be asked here is, why do you care if they use Christopher Reeve likeness anyway.

Are you a family lawyer to the Reeve family, if not no one cares whether you think it should be done or not..

and yes I put this post in bold letters just for you.

I have made all of the points I am going to on the subject. You can read what I wrote. I'm certainly not going to repeat it. The reasons I made are clear, precise, and to the point. If you don't get it, then it isn't on me. The estate needs to get paid for DCE's use of his image for Superman. And not the other way around.

Well, like Batusi pointed out with George Lucas and Star Wars actors, Warner Bros probably owns the rights to Christopher Reeve's likeness in the Superman suit.

If Dark Horse comics can have a sufficiently skilled artist draw a Luke Skywalker that looks like Mark Hamil, then WB/DC can probably do the same with Chris Reeve and Superman.

Artists have been using Reeve as a model for Supes for decades and currently Reeve's charity uses the DC-owned S-Shield as their logo on the tags they sell. So I don't think there is any problem.
