From Newsarama:

FIRST TEN ZUDA CONTESTANTS NAMED

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the announcement of the site going live next Tuesday, the next question in regards to DC’s ZudoComics webcomics site is “who will be on it?” The publisher has given Newsarama a peek at the list, which includes established comic creators as well as newcomers.

Alpha Monkey
Writer/Artist: Bobbie Rubio/Howard M. Shum
Summary: In a misguided attempt to save his son from the destruction of Earth by a comet (which then happens to miss the Earth entirely) a scientist rockets his son into another dimension. The child ends up on a parallel world ruled by Monkeys! Given unique powers by the planet’s bananas, the young boy fights off invading monsters as the planet’s new defender, Alpha Monkey!

This American Strife
Writer/Artist: Jason Longo
Summary: A quirky, humorous “Dear Diary” recounting of the artist’s observations on life, This American Strife is a sharp-witted visual stab at editorial blogging.

Battlefield Babysitter
Writer/Artist: Matthew Humphreys
Summary: In a family of superheroes, in a city of superheroes, in a world of superheroes, Katherine Fields is a babysitter. But when a routine night of babysitting turns into a villainous invasion, Katherine finds herself transformed into a super strong heroine. At $8.00 and hour, it’s going to be a long night.

Black Swan
Writer/Artist: Mulele Jarvis
Summary: A young college student, Nina, is embroiled in a 500-year-old vendetta when she encounters a spirit bound to a mystic dagger left on her doorstep. Implicated in murder and on the run from a detective possessed by a rival spirit it’s up to Nina to relive an age-old battle – without dying in the process.

Dead in the Now
Writer/Artist: Corey Lewis
Summary: When Braz – a young, cynical boy – discovers the world’s first authentic zombie he decides to end Earth’s monotonous routine and usher in an age of zombie-infested, chaotic adventure! Gathering supplies and weapons, Braz sets his friends up like modern, urban Lost Boys with himself as their Pan.

The Dead Seas
Writer/Artist: Pop Mhan
Summary: Legions of undead controlled by Necromancer warlords destroy life as we know it, plunging the Earth into a futuristic Dark Age. But it’s adventure and romance on The Dead Seas as a swashbuckling young pirate named Devin teams up with an adventurous crusader name Luna. Armed with the secret of Pandora’s Box, they set out destroy the Necromancers and save the world.

The Enders
Writer/Artist: Tim Smith III
Summary: Aluna didn’t ask to be given godlike power and she certainly didn’t ask for her parents to be killed in the process – but the enigmatic alien known as The Ender works in mysterious ways. Without time to grieve, Aluna is tasked with using her power to save the Earth from imminent destruction. The only question – how?

High Moon
Writer/Artist: David Gallaher/Steve Ellis
Summary: It’s the fading days of the Old West in the late 1890’s when an enigmatic drifter, Matthew Macgregor, ambles into the dusty town of Blest, Texas. The nights are cold in Texas as Werewolves secretly haunt the town, but Macgregor has a supernatural secret of his own. When the sun sets it’ll be a showdown at High Moon.

Leprenomicon
Writer/Artist: Greg DelCurla/Fernando Ruiz
Summary: In old Ireland, when the banshee sings for you it means that your time on this Earth is coming to an end. But American Michael O’Connor refuses to take this news lying down. With the (forced) help of a kidnapped Leprechaun, he intends to solve the mystery of his own death even if it turns the world of faeries, gods, and plain old normal folk upside down.

Raining Cats and Dogs
Writer/Artist: Sho Murase
Summary: A young, snake-haired gorgon named Mika, winds her way through the contemporary, everyday wonderland of dating, work, after-hours adventures and everything in between alongside her friends Apple (a rokurokubi energy-vampire), Feebe (a bake-neko cat girl) and Akiha (a normal human).

Once the site goes live on October 30th, guests will be able to vote for one of the ten above finalists, which will then continue on the site. Winners will receive contracts from Zuda to complete a year’s worth of their respective comic for Zudacomics.com.

Following the site’s launch, the majority of the competitions will feature webcomics submitted to Zuda through the website’s submissions process. As with the inaugural competition, Zudacomics.com’s visitors will vote for the webcomics that they want to see continue on the site.

David,

I like the concept....great title that conveys in two words your concept of a wild west/ werewolves mashup....Nice work!

Question, how did you and the other nine finalists get picked for the first submission, if the site hasn't even gone live yet?

Kwanza and Ron,

While I can understand the reasons for soliciting talent in advance of the launch date, this does bring up an interesting little problem for me;

I and a partner have been working for the past few months on a project titled "Growing Up Gorgon." I sent the Zuda offices a postcard with this title and a teaser image on it last July after the announcement at San Diego ComiCon, though the postcard was never posted on the site as I had placed my e-mail address on it as well. I came to discover, much later of course, that this prohibits you from showing the card on your website.

In your announcement today I see that you solicited a very similar concept from Sho Murase and it has been chosen as an instant winner for the Zuda launch.

I'm not accusing you or anyone at the Zuda offices of stealing my concept, of course, and Murase's work is much different then my own take on the subject, but the subject is unquestionably similar, to the point where, I would assume, they're mutually exclusive.

Is that the case? Can I no longer submit my entry even though the launch date for the general public has not yet occurred?

Murase's story is, after all, just an instant entrant for a contest, correct? There will still be voting involved by the Zuda community, right? Now if Murase's piece is chosen, then I can understand that Zuda would not be interested in another project so similar. But if it not chosen by the Zuda community then would my Gorgon piece have the opportunity to measured on its own merits in a later competition?

Please let me know how this plays out or if it's just a simple case of "beaten to the punch" and "back to the drawing board" for me. -Rob

Sho is not an instant winner, she is a competitor.

I can tell you from personal experience that you'll run into this as long as you are in any creative industry, robbery. We like to think we are all geniuses coming up with original ideas but you'd be surprised how many other people have similar ones. So yeah, it could be "beaten to the punch."

In fact, prior to working at DC I had an idea in mind that I chose to abandon because I found a talented group of artists that had the same idea and were executing it far better than I would have. Actually, I liked it so much, I recommended it for Zuda. So yeah, for me, it was "back to the drawing board."

That happens.

Finally, we came to the conclusion that a boatload of cards did not make it through the post. Yay, snail mail!

You still should submit your idea, but in this industry you have to have 20 more behind that. Best of luck.

Hey Rob ,
Kwanza is right in that you should absolutely send it on it - for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that you haven't read Sho's take on this concept and nobody on our side, myself included, has seen or read a single thing about your concept. It's entirely possible that they are vastly different in execution even if your initial reaction to the one or two sentence summary of Sho's concept seems similar.

As far as your postcard goes I think I need to clarify. We have been blurring out e-mail addresses not ditching those cards outright. We have a few hundred cards that were sent in that haven't made it online yet merely because time. It's our every intention to post every card that we get - within some obvious editorial bounds (no porn, no copyright infringement, etc). So if you sent in a card and you haven't seen it posted - unless it was lost in the mail, as Kwanza said - just give us time.

HEY PEOPLE FROM ZUDA, I HAVE A QUESTION FOR U ABOUT THAT SUBMISSIONS:

THE SUMARY IN THAT 10 DIFERENT STORIES ARE LIKE THE SINOPSIS FROM THE STORIES?

THIS IS THE FORM TO WRITE THE SINOPSIS OF OWN STORIES???

THANCK YOU SO MUCH AND, I HAD NOT IDEA THAT THE SUNMISSONS STARTED BEFORE TO 30 OCTOBER SO, YOU RECIBED MANY STORIES FOR THE COMPETITIONS? IF THAT IS TRUTH, NO ONE OR I DON'T KNEW ABOUT THAT...

THANCK U...

Oh...

I was under the impression that you were in search of non-professional talent.

Have I fundamentally misunderstood this project?
