Top Ten Season 2 #4: why wasn't it finished?

I just read this last issue and it just seems to drop off, we don't get any resolution to the plots and subplots, like the dead people in the fountain or Irma Geddon's status for Top Ten or even what happened to peregrines real husband.
Was there more issues planned or something? If this makes it into trade I doubt it will be well-reviewed.

There is a Top Ten Special coming out March 25, so maybe that raps the four-issue series up. Kind of strange that they didn't just extend it to five issues, if that's the case. I haven't read any of season two yet, so I'm not entirely sure if there's a link between season two and the special.

Have to agree with the comments. I thought the ending of 'season 2' in issue 4 very abrumpt. I can understand possibly having a cliff hanger, if we know we will see a 'season 3', but still.

The upcoming 'session 2 special' seems to focus on a different story with girl 2.

I too was very disappointed. My reaction was, "Huh? That's IT?"

Not being a regular poster, I must say that it seems like we're talking in an empty echo chamber. Any chance that someone with actual information (one of the creators or a Wildstorm staffer) will respond here?

FWIW, I've really never seen anyone from DC post to these forums, tho I do recall one of the creators of Terra Obscura was posting here.

Compare that with, say, the Image message board were several (tho not all) of the creators do participate in their forums.

Actually, some of the Wildstorm creators are really good at posting here - Christos Gage, Andy Lanning, Scott Beatty for instance. Ben Abernathy checks in a fair bit too.

Ok. When it comes to Wildstorm I am only interested in Planetary & ABC.

Well, I got the Session 2 Special last night.

While overall good, it didn't resolve anything from the Season 2 series.

Girl 2 is no longer a cop, now being a public defender. We see only a few of the Top 10 cops, as Girl 2 is the focus. Pete is her boy friend now, and apparently working as a security guard. Peregrin's husband is mentioned in passing (he's a lawyer), but no mention of Irma one way or another.

I really didn't care for the artwork. Someone else did the finishing, and it wasn't up to the standards. A lot of characters and things just didn't look right.

I was a little bothered by people calling Girl 2 an 'android'. Sorry, but to me an android is a humanoid robot. I took Girl 1 & 2 to being a artificially created humans, which, to me, is not an android.

Hi everyone-- here's the scoop on the series. It was originally pitched as ten issues (eight of the main story, two specials) that would comprise a whole season. Gene could only commit to four issues, so the series was billed as a 4-issue mini, but the issues that have come out had already been written at that point.

So the series has 4 more issues and another special to go (in this season), and the current special, with art by Da Xiong, is meant to see how the book will sell without Gene's art. Hopefully well enough to continue and finish off these storylines.

It's good to read the comments and see how the book is being received; I love writing Top 10, and can't wait to dive in again, if Providence allows.

I mentioned this on my blog, so if anyone on another forum wants to know the scoop, here's the link:

P.S. emb021, your comments about Girl 2 being called an android are well-noted. She is officially an artificially-created human, but in Neopolis, people use "android", "cyborg", and other such words relatively loosely (at least in my stories). To my thinking, she has some computer/robotic elements to her mind, and that's where some of the word confusion comes from.

Zander, thanks for explaining the situation. I think the decision to publish half a story without committing to the other half or telling readers in advance was highly unethical (to put it politely), but I'm sure that wasn't your call. I guess I will get the special when I go to my store tomorrow and hope for the best.

BUT: is Gene Ha the only artist who a) who would like to do Top 10, b) could do a good job with it and c) has a big enough name to boost sales? Not having heard of Da Xiong before, I hate to think that the decision on whether or not to publish the rest of the story will depend on how well the market responds to one issue drawn by him or her.

Zander, thanks very much for the update, it makes sense of the rather broken-off ending to #4. I really hope you get the opportunity to write more of the series, as so far it's been a great return for Top 10 fans. It feels very like the old series, I think - both your writing and Gene Ha's easter-egg-laden artwork.

I do agree with previous posters that DC should have committed to the full story from the start rather than making the second half conditional on sales. This series has had a lot of critical acclaim on CBR etc. and I'd have liked to think DC would 'get' that not allowing a critically well-received series to be finished properly would be a worse result for them than a few low sales - especially on such a well-loved title. We'll keep our fingers crossed that you get to complete it.

Thanks for the comments, guys; I can't really comment on what DC does or doesn't do in terms of marketing, but I do think the series would benefit from actually concluding. Here's hoping the zeroes are on the left of the decimal point.

Folks, I don't know about you, but I'm not content to let this be a pure dollars and cents issue. Somebody at Wildstorm or DC decided it was okay to deliberately mislead us, and it's NOT. I'm not saying they're bad people; I understand that Gene Ha's limited commitment put them in a difficult position. But they made a bad call, and now they need to make a good one.

So my question is, how do we elevate this from a dollars-and-cents issue to the PR, do-the-right-thing issue it deserves to be? Do we contact someone at Wildstorm, or DC---and if so, whom and how? Does anyone here have any contacts who could get this publicized on CBR, Newsarama, or any other suitable web sites? What else might be worth a try?

I say we need to send a message here---a message that says a) we want the rest of Top 10 Season Two, and b) don't ever do this to your readers again. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

Hi all-- Wildstorm has given me an email address through which you can contact them about Top Ten and voice your opinions about it being continued or cancelled. I'm touched that people seem to like the series so much; let's let them know how well it's being received, shall we?

Thanks!
